Jesse is an academic doctor, regularly involved in teaching. His particular interest is the optic nerve pathophysiology that links and differentiates glaucoma and other optic nerve disorders. He is developing collaborative projects to create new devices for research here in Wellington, and planning interesting new trials.

Jesse also has an interest in managing eye diseases across different populations. In New Zealand he is exploring new online systems for enhancing collaborative care and virtual clinics, to improve quality and efficiency in the patient pathway.

Jesse has experience in global ophthalmology, including the small incision manual cataract operation, and he continues outreach trips to Pacific countries with the Pacific Eye Institute (supported by Fred Hollows Foundation New Zealand) and Volunteer Ophthalmic Services Overseas. These outreach trips are coordinated to support a long-term vision for developing a sustainable permanent eye care service in Pacific nations.
