Research Projects

This is a list of recent and ongoing projects at Capital Eye Specialists:

  • ARTEMIS multinational trial of bimatoprost SR implants (compared to timolol eye drops).  We are a participating centre. This trial is sponsored by Allergan.
  • ATHENA multinational trial of bimatoprost SR implants (compared to SLT laser treatment).  We are a participating centre. This trial is sponsored by Allergan.
  • Timolol administration study, comparing methods of eye drops administration to reduce systemic side effects.
  • Laser iridoplasty studies. Using high quality OCT imaging we have measured the changes in the anterior chamber with laser iridoplasty, exploring the mechanism and longevity of these effects.
  • Open source pupilometer. This collaboration with Victoria University of Wellington schools of Design and Engineering has developed a new device for testing pupil reactions. The device both expands on the capability of standard devices and clinical testing, but also is made cheaply from commonly available components. Multiple future projects using the device are planned.
  • Optic nerve head drusen. These common and benign deposits in the optic disc are poorly understood and raise interesting hypotheses about the physiology of the optic disc. We have conducted a review and published a brief study to explain the OCT findings.
  • Eye movements as biomarkers of disease. Rapid eye movements are difficult to examine, but they can reveal information about the brain. We are developing cheaper ways to examine rapid eye movements as biomarkers.
  • Mitochondrial copy number. This intriguing biomarker may be indicative of response to mitochondrial mutation or dysfunction, and might be modifiable by medications to reduce risk of vision loss in certain circumstances. A phase one trial is planned.
